Hello Everyone,

Well I've been reading on this hydroxy stuff for quite a while but I still feel like I have no idea what is going on.

So I thought that I might as well build a generator to educate myself.

I've read about all the different types of cells and they all seem to work.  It's really hard to decide what to build.

I cam across several sheets of this perforated material I can buy cheap.  But I'm undecided what to do with it.

It measures about 10 1/2" x 23". The perforated section is about 7" x 18 3/4".  The holes are about 1mm each.

Here is a link to a pic of it......

I have access to a plasma cutter so I can cut whatever I want.

Can you guys give me some ideas on a cell design using this material?

I guess this should probably go in the building section if someone wants to move it......Wink

We're not that picky here Medic !
as long as its stainless steel you can do many things with it.... make a dry cell but with a preferated sheet all the way to the outside edges that gets problematic stopping leaks! but shower pan gaskets do a good job... hard to say if it would work on preferated sheets though....
a fella Named LTC Fisher made a tube cell out of preferated sheeting and had great luck with it... there are some pics in the photo section about his cells... not many as its hard to get info out of him , he just don't talk much at all ! HEHEHEHEHE !
...
rolling a sheet around a 2" hunk of pipe and then tack welding it  with a short over lap seams to work ok....  however the more accurate you are at keeping the plates evenly spaced the better the output will be... and its very hard to ROLL your OWN !
...
another idea is a wet cell and have the plates alternating in polarity +-+-+-+- fashion
again, the closer you can get the plates without touching the better off you are....
using a scheme like that of the "Randy cell" for the alternating polarity on the plates should be great for preferated plates... but getting them to be 1/8" appart or so isn't easy.... even with "Half-nuts"
you can when in doubt simply put 2 plates in a container and connect them to the battery terminals and watch it bubble ... but be aware that the bubbles are a very explosive gas !  don't light it with a match !
you can use Koolaide, Lemonaide (un sweetened) as an electrolyte, Potassium Hydroxide (KOH).... even Vinegar !.... but stay away from anything with sodium in it ( like sodium hydroxide...as some people like to use! ) because the salt makes dangerous deadly gasses and also makes Green GOO... a scum that floats on the surface of the water and its a pain in the butt ! it will coat the plates and the plates will slowly quit working... so salt is a no-no !
....
...
if it were me... I'ed probably go for a "Randy Cell" but make it out of Preferated plates.... not washers.... it won't be an easy build but it could be one of the best if you do it right !
...

Bob,

Are you maybe mixing up Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) which folk still use,  with Sodium Chloride (NaCL) or common salt.
This does indeed produce chlorine (I think) and that is bad stuff to be breathing.

Either of them Manta ! they both contain Sodium and its the sodium that make the chlorine gas (if I got my information straight <GRIN>)
Don't use the Drain cleaner (sodium Hydroxide) in your Hydroxy cell ! Period !... I know some people still do but it is a filthy thing to use... even if it is readily available ! ...
I'd rather see people buy 25 packs of lemonade than any Sodium Hydroxide ! ...
.....
I have used KOH (flake form) with good success that is "Potassium Hydroxide" as an electrolyte
but under extream heat it turns to Dark Coffee brown. and coats the cells
however your cell shouldn't be reaching those temperatures...but mine did, so its a good indicator that your cells are running way too hot!
... I have never ran into any problem at all using Lemonaid Koolaide... the biggest problem with Koolaid is it reaches the point of Saturation before the amps get very high...
(22 to 25 amps max on my cell with Koolaid 30 to 35 amps Max with KOH)
...
...all in all between the 2 I'll take Lemonaide Koolaide anyday ! ... there was no dirtyness at all with it... and the KOH did turn brown after some time at high amps....
( probably my own stupidity too! )
...
for what its worth... its just my opinion, others swear by Sodium Hydroxide.... to each their own!
...
