the Motor !

According to a few Electric car conversion sites out there on the web getting the right motor for
your car conversion is crutial.
Unfortunately most if not ALL these motors will set you back 2 to 3 THOUSAND dollars!
... that is way to rich for my income to even think about so I got to thinking about Making my own motor...
I was thinking of a 1" steel shaft about 12" long as the main motor shaft... and on that
attach a 1/4" 12"to 18" diameter Aluminum disk and attach 8 or 12 rare earth magnets equally spaced on the outside edge of the disk(these would be glued in) with every magnet facing the same way.
and then have 4 electro magnets around the parameter to pull and push the disk around
the switching to these electromagnets would be accomplished on the 1" main shaft by putting an piece pf PVC pipe on the shaft as an insulator first and then copper bars as the commentator, with thin pieces of PVC or resin in between these strips.
2 large brushes would then be used to transfer the power to the electromagnets (one for each polarity pos and neg.)
.... this gets very difficult to accomplish real fast as the timing and spacing must be perfect
so in my drawings I simplified it to only use the PUSH side and that was easy to accomplish
with such a large diameter the torque should be very high and the power drain fairly low depending on the electro-magnets used.
now weather or not the motor would have enough power to move a 1500lb car is another thing...
but I think it should....
all this takes allot of money and much work...so I decided to forget it for now.
I think it can be done, and a very powerful motor would be the results for much much less than the going price of an equivalent motor on the market today.
the Large Diameter is the Key here.... not the power of the electro magnets although they need to be as powerful as possible.

Problem is that as the diameter increases so do the gyroscope effects.

RightO'
thats why I figured cutting a rectangle out of the disk for each magnet to be placed in and then glued.... I didn't say that but that was the plan... I figured at least 1/4" in from the outside edge of the disk should leave enough meat to hold the magnets in under very high RPM
...its a guess at best ... if the motor gets to 4kRPM's and spits out a magnet through the hood
I'll know it needed 1/2" from the outside edge LOL !
...
I was amazed at a few motors I saw like this on TV just one small electric motor about 12" in diameter and about 2" thick pushed a fella on a bicycle very easily with 1 12vdc car battery
they are a revolution in their own right.... Westinghouse Patented the large diameter motor back in the time of Edison but never developed it for some reason instead they went with the small diam and Long design... which puts out much less torque but higher RPM.
what we want for a Auto is high torque, and RPM up to about 3000rpm that fits this type of motor to a "T" the torque is about 4 times as much as the standard electric motor even a starter motor for an engine... these things are really strong...
but How I designed it may or may not work at all, its a guess and I am not an electric motor guru by any means ! LOL
someone was developing these new fancy motors and trying to sell them but I don't know who it was... but like anything else they probably want the earth for one ! the amazing thing about them was the torque output vs the amp draw it was like 1/8 that of a standard electric motor for the same torque !
