When I put up my horozonal 40mtr Loop  I put it about 20ft off the ground is all
even though I had 100ft pine trees to hang it off of... and it worked very well
... a horozonal Loop in my view is one of the best wire antennas you can have !
they hear and radiate fantastically and do have a DB gain over a dipole at the same height and are mostly Omni directional, depending on the height above the ground.
I matched the High impedance of the loop with a 1/4 wave of 75Ohm TV coax and then just fed the TV coax with my 50Ohm antenna coax.... and I had a fairly good match
...I can't remember exactly what the match was, but as the years went on I wound up putting the MFJ Versa tuner 2 in line to match it to make the finals on the 301D happy... and when I did that I could realy get out  I guess I was halfing my 100watt
output before...heheheheh
 ...
I'ed like to get up a 80mtr loop here at the Ranch but thats another project for another time heheheheheh

Actually I'm using a Penofin Penetrating Oil Finish at $95 a gallon but I get it onine for $38 and it last better than any paint. The ham who gave me the towers had them up for 6 years and when I put a new coat of that stuff on them it only took 2/3 gal for all 3 towers and I sloped it on too. This Arizona dry windy climate really eats any paint on anything. It literally shreds any tarps we use in just a matter of months. I'm planing to use this Penofin on the hard cedar wooden blades for the wind turbine I'm building. I just might paint the steel tower for the wind turbine that sky blue. Then she'll think it's a UFO and rally go berzerk. Actually she is OK, just likes to give me ar hard time. We've known each other for too many years. I trade her my sourdough bread for veggies out of her garden. I really do need to get my old SBE 1Kwatt amp hooked up. Then I could talk to those guys in the swamps down there in FL. They can't hear me with only 85-100 watts from the ic-745.

tink, i think the icom is fine, mine is old , not all the bells and whistles, but u donn't need all those.  Looks like u have a wicked veiw, and some altitude.  We would make great neighbors, lol.  Veiw here is not the greatest, but where I got the plot for the new house is phenomenal.  Also the power helps but it is the gain of the antenna that really makes the diff.  I did well for years with 100 watts, and seldom use amp.

U have to give me a call someday to swap war stories, same goes for u bob, i am a slow typer, and we could cover a lot more ground on land line.  ph. here is 1-518-856-0152.  I work 4 tens, get home 5:45 est. but I  amd hard to catch, lol lot of outside work.

thanks for the offer Mike but I don't talk on the phone unless I absoultly have to !
I eather e-mail or txt messages...heheheh  I'm getting where I lothe the telephone!
.... probably why I graviated away from ham radio years ago too... dunno why I just would rather type than talk ! HAHAHAHA
...
I had a nice Ride on the bike this morning already, the wife has her lunch at 2:30am
so I went and met her at Walmart and I took her to lunch at Dennys resturant...
was fun... and I got to ride the bike which I realy do enjoy... don't get a chance to do that too often anymore... Anyhoo I got to check out the changes I made on the bike the other day and it was a big improvement in the handleing so that made me happy. that bike sure gets up and hauls, if I give it the rains... its so darn heavy though it makes for "perfect Stops" or nothing else.... at 850lbs without the saddlebags and windshield and all the other stuff on it she is HEAVY !
so I am thinking seriously of trading her in on a 750cc or maybe just maybe a triumph 750cc Bonneville...(problem there is only dealer is in Sacramento over 250miles away... )
Although I love the power and get up and GO of the 1100cc Honda Shadow, the hourndious weight penalty is really just too much! its not very agile and to me that what a bike is supposed to be !
... its not like I can go over 100mph anymore with all the CHP's out there now...<GRIN>  so down grading to a lighter bike my be just the thing for me.
...maybe even a 650cc on-off road machine ...however any of them I have set on I couldn't touch the ground ! ( idiots!)
...
sure was a nice ride though.... even if my hands were numb by the time I got to town... getting Old SUX ! HAHAHAHAH
...

Manta,
that really is the moon. You should see the Milky Way out here. I tell the time in the evening by the big dipper. Back in the early '70's we used to sit out at night on the lawn chairs and watch the UPFs in the sky almost every night. At that time we were getting flyers from the local rancers about all the cow mutialtions. That Roswell thing happened not too far from where we had a ranch. I remember talking about it with the ranchers.

Mike,
The view is great. I'm at 6,500 feet altitude and that must help hearing all the hams all over the world. They just can't hear me, yet.

Bob,
Ok onthe bike ride Bob, I have an old 1987 honda goldwing with only 57,000 miles, I bought it used.  I took her for a good ride today, had to get some fertilizer and lime for the garden, also had to get some water proof fuse for the fun stuff, lol.  That ended up being a 100 + ride, but it was a nice one, and at 40 mpg a cheap one, lol.  My  bike is heavy also, and top heavy, with me on it it weighs close to 1000, and i only weigh 160 lbs, just a little guy.
Tink,
At that altitude just throw up a dipole and make sure it is oriented proper for who u want to work, even 5 watts should get u out!  73's

Mike I'm still learning propigation. Sometimes I can talk with guys in Seattle and even Wisconsin. That's rare though. I can't wait for the sunspots to come back. I'm short on money right now but am interested i that old tube radio. Do you think I could use my old SBE SB2-LA Linear with it?

Guys,
Talk about top heavy bikes, I had a 750 Honda K model and when my girlfriend would lean the wrong way it would fall over, no way to hold it up. I couldn't even get it on the the stand that lets the rear wheel off the ground without a wedge I made out of a 6x6. When I learned how to tune the wire spoke wheels I could get it over 100mph easy. Of course I had to replace those 4 big tail pipes with a 4 into-one and add case guards to stabalize it.

Tink,
I am not sure have to check on the sbe-sb2, i will research it, and sunspots are bad for like 80 meters, they work mostly for 10,15, 20, and 40,?

Sorry Tink,
I got side tracked and did not finish on sunspots, (solar radiation), it is bad for 40, 80, and 160 meters, it causes what is called static crashes.  The lower bands in hf are mostly long wave which means they don't tend to use the ionesphere, (I know I spelt that wrong), lol., to bounce the r wave back to earth. the lower bands in hf tend to hug the earth and kind of bend with the horizon (so to speak).

Hey  Tink checked on the sbe-sb2,
It was a pretty good amp from what I read, used 6 sweep tubes, but they are expensive.  It should work fine, the amp is only an extension of ur radio, only thing to watch out for is the keying circuit, but I think u would be fine.

Yea when I talk to Bob in Platt city in MO I hear many Static Crashes. Only sometimes I can talk to Gary in Moriority NM he is only 250 miles from me and we can talk maby once every two weeks but then the signal is 5x9 or better. Bob is runing 600 watts and I always hear him. But the band is so noisey lately it is difficult to connect. What bands does that HW-101 cover?
