Weather your a Old Ham or not, This board may help you get a grasp on the basics of Hydroxy cell construction....and may Not.  its Primary function is to give us a Place to BS about Ham radio stuff.
 So have fun !

Bob,
I gotta figure out what is happening with this message posting. About 10 lines in to a post my typing gets delayed and not very responsive. I don't know what it is. Maby my system is getting too hot. Has anyone else complained about this?

I'll do a de-frag this weekend and see if that helps. Sometimes my system gets a little sluggish at other times too.

heheh I did a de-frag about 2 weeks ago took almost 24hrs but I left it going and went to bed....
got up the next day and re started the machine and I couldn't believe how much faster the computer was !
it was like night and day !  almost 2 times as fast as it had been!
....
I should make a back up of my Hard Drive too but  who has 128gig capasity of back up NOW ? that would take a bunch of 640MB CD's thats for sure ! so I have resolved to backing up my real important files ONLY...   I have junk on this computer I've never even looked at ! HAHAHHA its a Hudge HD and man do I ever like it... now if I could get the System memory Maxed out it might really fly !
...
Tink are you running your computer on battery or an inverter ?  I've often wondered what I'edpower my computer with if I had to get off the grid !
.... I'm thinking battery power is the answer but to hand craft a battery system to supply all the voltages of diferent types  its hardly worth it !

Bob,
First off if you boot up in 'System configuration' then do the defrag it takes much less time since you don't have all the background stuff running. 2nd. you know now you can get a 320gig USB HD for $70 at Walmart. I have both my systems backuped on the one 320gig external hd since you can take it from system to system. It's the best backup there is. 3rd. My house is just like living on the grid except the AC is much cleaner. The trick is you have to get the best possible inverter. Outback now makes the best in my opinion. My system is built around the Xantrex SW4024 a true sinewave inverter but Outback's equivenent is even better. If you use a 'modified sinewave inverter' it will destroy your computer over a few years. Some things won't even run properly on it. I'm only running one inverter but if you run 2 inverters hooked up in parellel you can run 240 volt. that gets expensive. Don't even consider 12 volt go with at least 24volt or even better 48 volt. The inverter takes care of everything and you can even set the voltage you want for output. Don't even think about running off battery since the fluctuation of voltage from any battery would destroy a computer system. Laptops are different but then those batteries cost $150 or more to replace too. If you use a modified sinwave inverter the choppy wave is what kills sensitive electronics. It's also very important to have a battery monitor (meter) on your system so you can see at any given time what the condition of your batteries are. You gotta get a good one and you'll pay at least $150 for a decent battery monitor.

I used to be active on 2 meter years ago when I lived in the LA area. But here 2 meter is dead. No activity.I use a Discone all band antenna dfor scanning and listening to AM and FM and all that stuff. It's mounted on a25 foot tower beside my house and I can brodcast on it up to 200 watts. It's a great antenna and only costs $59 and comes with 50 foot of wire.
Tink this darn thing is slowing down again . gota go. Doing a defrag this weekend.

Ahh thanks for the INFO there Tink ! thats good to know!
...
here at the "Ranch" when I was a Kid we lived off the grid for about 15 years
so I can make do to a certain extent without electricity.
However times have changed and so have my toys so it looks like a "True Signwave Inverter" is the only way to go !
finding one I can Afford is a whole nother story however ! HAHAHAHA
those puppies are expensive !
...
We ran Generators here for a long time and finally just gave up on them and went 12vdc and charged the batteries with the car.
I learned to hate generators when I was younger hehehehhe
maybe with a GEET reactor on one it wouldn't cost too much to operate though.
...
IF I can ever get caught up here at the Ranch I'll have time to do some of the things I'ed like to try here... like a wind turbine and inverter system
....a landing strip for my gyro, and build a new "Spring" for our water supply !
... maybe in about 5 years LOL !
....
HAHAHAHHA
...
My 2mtr antenna is still up a cedar tree in shingletown... and I need to get it down and put it up here... thats a chore I am not looking forward to !

Bob,
I had ment to say to boot your system in 'System Mode'. That way you avoid running all that background stuff and defrag goes much faster.

Bob,
I spent all day de-fraging my HD. Its a 120gig and 69% free space and it took 12 hours in Safe Mode. It's been a long time since I did a defrag on this one. Sorry I was telling you System Mode, it's Safe Mode and you get there by hitting F5 while booting up. I think I'm loosing my mind. But I am still enjoying life. Cheesy

HAHAHA Actually I figured you ment "Safe mode" because I never seen anything else that would allow that sort'a thing...
so no biggy !
...
My last De-frag took most of the day but I had completed about 15hrs of defragging about 2 months before that and got tired of waiting and never did get back to it...
heheheheh
I have seen my computer take 2 days to complete a De-frag and that is just plane silly...
so I WILL try the "Safe Mode DE-Frag" next time I de-frag this beasty
...
I worked a bit on My Motorcycle this evening, and took the shock extensions I made for the rear swing arm off and put it back in its original configuration.
I did this because of the handleing it has been showing me lately... down right
lousie ! most of the roads here have length wise Patches in them and they have been throwing me all over the road... and the bike has never done that before
I also put more air in the tires witch will probably make all the diference in the world right there as I only had about 10 p.s.i in both tires ! LOL
I put 22 in both  and I expect it to ride like a cement truck !!!!!!
I drug my floor board the other day on a mild turn ( that wakes you up!)
so I figured the bike was a bit too low ! HAHAHAHAHA
we'll see if I can realy hang the cornors now or not.... hehehehe

I always reckoned that you are better off with two or three smaller hard drives than one very large item.

just think of all the data you can lose if it crashes. Shocked  A stack of 40 Gig units is ideal.  Having said that,  I have just the one 80 gig on this machine.  One of the newer tera bite drives looks attractive,  but I think I'll pass on it for the above mentioned reasons.

Also much quicker to de-frag a smaller drive.

Well, that didn't work. I tried to up load a 353kb photo and it didn't take it. I guess it really means 300kb file limit. O well here is another one at VGA mode. My antanna garden, sorry not too clear. It's the 3 homebrew wooden 43' towers supporting the Extended Horizontal Lazy H and the Discone on the 25' Lattice tower and the R7 at the end of the house. By far I get more use out of the R7. It was a good DX antenna in its day and still is. I rebuilt it once as the wind had split the main tube.

Manta, kudos, I agree. I have the 320gig USB drive I use only for backup all three of my HDs I should not have to defrag it since it only for backup, I never run anything from it.

HAY Congrats Tink ya did it !    hehehehe I knew ya could figure it out if ya tried !
HEHEHEHE
Hay if you paint those wooden towers sky blue they will vurtually disapeer....
infact I had a 25ft bottom loaded hunk of water pipe with a 60ft hunk of wire on the top to the telephone pole (sort'a a inverted "L") while I was in the trailer park in Vinton,Ca. and it worked fairly well but I painted it sky blue and you could not see the silly thing
it up and disapeared...
You should tell your neighbor your going to take the towers down...then paint them and put them back up.... I bet you she won't notice their back up ! HAHAHAHAH
...
seriously... my antenna realy did vanish I had top look hard for it standing in the front yard and that was less than 100ft away !....
you can get realy sneeky and paint the bottom portion thats level with the trees a green and brown  splotchie color  as in Camo... and then I know they won't see them... and if they don't see them they won't complain.
besides the wood will last much longer if it has paint!!!!!
....yah I know it means you have to take the towers down to do it , but its well worth it....
