While brouseing through Northern tool and Hydrolics catalog the other day I saw the perfect thing for pulling brush up with my tractor...
although they want in excess of $400 bucks for the silly thing I understand its principal and decided to make one for the tractor myself.... if I can find the time to do so!
I'll pull off the bucket on the o'l furggy tractor and make a unit that replaces the bucket
with extended leverage for the bucket tilt for added ripping power.
the idea is essentually 2 plates that are henged on the outside edge so the plates will angle up when a bush is between them... these 2 plates when raised will bite into the wood and pinch togather at the same time, makeing it a very strong grabbing unit....
I figure the biggest thing I will try to UP ROOT is probably going to be about 6" in diamator... ( probably not that big realy) but with soft soil after a good rain it might be able to pull something that big up...hard to say.... so the placement of the plates will have to be about 12" to 15" appart
henged on the outside edges and just clear each other in the center...
with the henges set so they open up and not down  and a angle cut on the plates to allow the brush to inter between the plates, the action should be stright forward... drive up to the brush... lower the unit to the ground move forward and get the brush between the steel plates and then lift up on the loader....if the loader cannot lift it the twist of the bucket should rip it loose ... then drive to the brush pile and rotate the bucket to drop it off the plates....
...
in theory it should work great... but I can see the need for at least 1/2" steel plates on this thing
and some hefty metal attaching it to the loader arms....
although the one in the catalog has 2 plates on top each other I think that will be unnecessary...I guess I'll see ! what might occur is lifting up will cut the brush off... instead of ripping it out of the ground if the ground is real hard (like during summer)  so that is a possibility.... but even that is still a much easier way to get the brush down than a chainsaw and an axe !
... we shall see ....if I can find the time to build the thing.... I think I have the metal all lined up already... so it should be interesting to say the least!

That sounds like an interesting setup.  I think I have a good mental picture, but I would love to see images when you're done

Well, Here is the "Scabbed togather" Prototype LOL
...
I took it over to a 3" oak tree to "test the metal" and wound up finding a weak spot in the construction (as i figured I might!).
I wound up lifting the back of the tractor up off the ground, it pulled so hard, and then got a plate caught and ripped the plate loose !
so after repairing the chain link Henges, I desiced to add a chain under the plates to help pull the plates togather and stop the brush from getting behind the plate... the chain is on top the plates in the pic. it will go under the plates and dangle between the plates, I can rotate the appratious to 90degrees even with the long leverage I have on the bucket rotate cylinder so there is a bunch of power there....
when the ground gets wet again I will give it a try and see if I can pull up that brush
if it works like I plan I should be able to drive up ,rotate the bucket control and get it centered in the jaws of the grabber... then raise the unit and pull the brush out of the ground...
or I can Rotate the thing and rip it loose... kind'a depends on how stubbern the bush is! HAHAHA
then drive over the the brush pile and slide it off the jaws by lowering the boom a bit and pulling back as I do it... should work ...but who knows at this point! HAHAHA

...
here's a pic.

Prototypes are there to be broken...  Cheesy  Glad to hear you got it working though.  The image won't open for me, it tells me it's not actually a *.jpg file.
