I have tried the kool aid in bench testing my cells, It seemed to electroplate the cell and I think that it more less killed the cell, I took the cell apart and re-sanded it and it was very hard to sand off, Has anyone else had this problem with the kool aid or koh.

Did you use Kool-aid with sugar by any chance. I tried lemon kool-aid without any proublems, not much gas but it didn't hurt any thing though. I tried 40 packs in a liter of water pulled 5 amps. Not verry usefull. I to would like to find something safer than (robic drain cleaner). Have not found it yet.If someone finds it please let us know. I dont like burning my fingers eather.

Abe,  Just my under educated opinion, but you're searching for something that conducts electricity well, and is healthy for you...  Water (pure) is less conductive than copper.  The only soluble items I can think of are acid based.  Salt is an acid, it's just healthy for you in limited quantities.  I hate to be 'that' guy, but you're going to have to 'suck it up' and deal with it.  In no way do I mean to be unsafe.  When you're dealing with KOH, or any other possible electrolyte, wear eye goggles, and full length clothing.  I've hit myself with battery acid and I know first hand that even with full length clothing, if you wait too long to wash it the acid still tears it up.  Please be safe, but understand that you can't be 100% and still 'experiment'.  That's why it's an experiment.  Electricity by itself is still an experiment.  Nothing is known about it, it's all still theory and we're trying to make it do something...

Thanks Cowboy    I'm not a chemist but I think salt will produce a gas that can kill. I tkink I'll stay away from that.Answers for today questions will be answered tommorow.Dont give up the chase, who new you could make so many things out of a little peanut. I'm sure someone will find something even if its apple juice.

Abe,

I think chlorine is the gas you are thinking of.  Not healthy.  Except maybe when it's chlorinating your pool.

Salt is bad in a Hydroxy generator... I tried it first... green goo about 2" thick in my 5 gal bucket and growing by the second! it coats the plates and prevents water from reaching the plates and will eventually shut down all production...
...
I have used Lemonaid with good success on cells that have very close plate spaceing
such cells need less electrolyte to draw higher amps... so if the plates are spaced wider than 1/16" your going to have truble getting enough amps useing unsweetened lemonaid...
...
KOH (potasium Hydroxide) is the best Electrolyte I have found for general purpose electrolyte... yes its nasty stuff so treat it with respect!
...Potasium Hydroxide is NOT the same as Sodium Hydroxide.... Sodium Hydroxide has SALT in it and will cause goo problems from what I understand...(I have not used it )
...
Vinegar does indeed work as an electrolyte but like Koolaid it takes allot of it
and the plate spacing of the cell does play a part in being able to draw enough amperage....
I ran 100% vinegar in my cell for a few days to test it and it only would draw about 10 amps...which wasn't enough for me ... I wanted 20amps.
so I switched to KOH...
...
All in all with all things considered I believe KOH to be the best all around
Electrolyte... even if I Prefure Lemonaide..., not being able to reach High amp draw with Lemonaid is a real show stopper...
...

We really don't need to be overly concerned with what catalyst we put into our generators. The real problem is what we get out as a byproduct (if we use stainless steel electrodes) after we turn them on. Hexavalent Chromium. According to the owner of the plating company that passivates and electropolishes my plates (he has been in the electrolysis business for thirty five years) "if you use stainless steel for electrodes you will make hexavalent chromium." As an aside he also tells me, if you use stainless steel you will get muddy electrolyte, "don't want mud, don't use stainless".

Has anyone Tried Borax? as in the laundry detergent - it is a naturally occurring mineral - they have been talking about that as a catalyst in Hydrogen Fuel Cells - just a though - on another forum - I put a bunch of links (it was also on a different computer - so I don't have access to them right now
