Not sure I'd like to use a stereo amp for cells, first off what impedance speaker is it designed for 4 ohm ?

(thinking of my formulas now)

V=I x R

and we say have a 12 v supply so 12/4 = 3 amps

12 x 3 = 36 Watts not much now lets look at a 40 V supply (most audio amps are this even car audio amps some are even -40 0 +40 to give 80 V )

so 40/4 =10 Amps

40 x 10 =400 Watts - this is getting close for wattage now lets look at 80 Volts

80/4 =20 Amps

80 x 20 =1600 Watts ( double the voltage gives 4x the power output )

Now that is assuming a 4 ohm amp some amps can be run at 2 or even 1 ohm but these start getting expensive for example try putting 4 speakers of 4 ohms onto your normal car stereo chances are you blow your output IC's as they are not designed for 1 ohm load

Now we know some here are getting up around 60 amps or more with their cells on DC battery lets look at this formula slightly different

12v/60amps = is 0.2 ohms this is extremely low impedance for almost and audio amp you will almost for certain kill it unless it has idiot protection built in

Ok so the other option is to build the cell to run at 80 v that would be around 40 ~ 50 plates that may work but the jury is still deciding if the more plates in series require more amps or not

My suggestion is first know what resistance / impedance your cell is find out the output voltage of your amp ( this can be worked out by looking at the RMS output at a given impedance most instruction books sales brouchers have this info ) and take it from there as I dont think a warrenty covers your amp if used outside normal specs even shorting a speaker wire breifly can kill it and it proberly wont be cover

I myself also thought of this a while back but have stayed away from that idea for now but of you like give it a go try hooking it to a 0 20 Khz audio oscillator who knows you might at least find a magical note ( or tune )

I read somewhere on the net that a guy was using a audio amp to power his small cell setup and used an MP3 player that he has a certian frequancy "Note" of very long duration stored as a song... he simply played the MP3 Note into the amp and it powered the cell
... how good it worked I have no idea but with enough wattage good production should be achievable especially if you play a note at the resonant frequancy of the Electrolyte/water
( somewhere around 8 to 10 HZ if I remember right)
...if a person pushed 5000watts into a cell at say 10hz you might wind up with more output than you'ed normially get from using stright DC voltage... but this is a guess
...
experimention is needed to prove weather the "THEORY" is good or not !
it, for all intents and Purposes "SHOULD" produce a great deal more Hydroxy as than the usual method... but a great deal of power and LARGE audio amps would be required... and care taken to keep the impedance matched to the output amps to protect the final amps from burning up.
... that would take someone smarter than me to accomplish !!! <GRIN>
