What causes the blackish muck in my bubler? How can I keep this from not happening?
These 3 drycells make alot of this.

I believe ( not certain by any chance!) that the Black stuff  the flakes that get on everything are Cooked pieces if KOH that stick togather....
in other words the cells are running quite warm... if not please tell me !  other wize it could be the goo leaching out of the metal and it should fo away in time if you flush it regularly for about a week stright...
it took almost a full week of flushing mine before it finally started clearing up running it every day for aprox 2 hrs but once the cells stopped leaching out stuff from the metal it stayed clear for a long time until it got realy hot and then it changed to a coffee brown
and coated the plates and production droped to almost nothing.... I am sure the coffee brown color of the electrolite is due to excessive heat as at the same time I melted some pop off caps !  ( it was over 110degrees in the valley at the time ! I was running 3 Randy cells in series and then switched to only 2 in series which only seamed to make it worse, output did improve but the electrolite would not even last a day before it was coffee brown !.....
SO ..i gave the cells a Muratic Acid bath for about 30 min ( don't do this long... 10 min should do it!) and it cleaned up fine, the next day the KOH was coffee brown again...
so HEAT and KOH do NOT mix ! ....
if your cells are running under 100 degrees you should be fine,  the black flakes may or may not be leaching from the metal... but I think they are !
... when in doubt flush the heck out of it and make new electrolite !
...
thats all I can think of for ya !
...

Is it possible the o-rings you use to seal the cells with are breaking down somehow causing this.I've used neoprene for about a year and I've never seen any black debris or e-lyte.

hmmm all good points. Guess I'll tear it down come spring time and see what the issue is. I have a feeling it's the EPDM.
