Here's the siduation... we have about 8 new members 2 or 4 of them share the same IP address
they all have goofy names and no profile at all...
to me its OBVIOUS that someone is gearing up to drown us in Porn...
HOWEVER... some of these members may well be ligit !  that is the reason Dan Wells didn't delete any of them till it was too late...

but I see the Writing on the wall and I know that these Porn skum A-holes are paitiant
...
I am certain the only way to keep them out is to go with Aproval only membership
and even then a few will slip in...

So my question to you guys is this.... Do I Delete all the members that havn't posted a single post ?  to stave off the Porn Crap...
or alow them to post Porn and THEN delete them ?

... this is the age old delema... I'm dammed if I do and Dammed if I don't !
I don't want a single Porn post here.... but I know there are members that Lurk and say nothing at all... thats fine by me , but they put themselves in danger of being deleted
because of their silance.

If they don't have an email delete em. If they do send em an email if you don't get a return in a few hours delete em.

well this site gets moderated daily, so I wouldn't worry about it until they post the smut, then smok em and anyone with the same IP address.

Everyone has an email address... thats part of the membership log in procedure

so I think after a while they should give up !...but unfortionately it doesn't work that way
others replace them and it keeps going on forever !

It's a real delima. I' a computer guy and once I played around with spam to see how it is done. Believe me these guys are always one step ahead of you. It's a whole culture. They have the attitude that anything goes. In my experiments I was able to find a port in the system of a local provider that was open and I was able to use it to send millions of emails in the wee hours of the morning. That provider would have never found out if it wern't for a user of his system turned me in. I had some explaining to do. It was worth it just to see how it is done. And the last time I checked that local provider hasn't shut that door. He is leaving himself open to anything. I haven't keep up with these fourms and don't know how they work. I wish I could give you some advise but I an't got any. I guess you just have to keep an eye out. In this case are you saying they all have the same IP but use different email addresses? Maby you could do some research on that IP and see what it is. It may be a freindly IP for smut. Are you able to monitor a post before it is viewable on the fourm? I know that wouldn't be very timely. Maby you could narrow it down to post with links and or pics. This can get complicated.

Some phrases (full regexes actually) being blacklisted, currently this won't allow someone to post if the message contains something blacklisted.

An I am pondering an anti-bot registration question for new users accounts.

Currently I am waiting to update the codebase... ^{*twiddles paws*}

Ok, that is in so if it starts bitching about not being able to post because of something blacklisted tell me please. Otherwise things should be as functional and quiet as they were.

Feral Just  may have solved the entire problem... sense we are not the only site on the web that has these problems there is a BLACK LIST of URL sites...
their on wikipedia site and free for the DL I believe...
anyway She updated the Forum here to include that "Black List"
and it will not allow you to post the URL of the black listed sites... this list is about as long as my arm and is constantly updated both at wikipedia and here on this site as well
...
She is also implementing a ANTI-BOT Registeration thing that will keep out most of the Bots
...which will help a bunch as well...

none of this will effect our normal use...

I asked Bob to explain an he even got it mostly right

The new anti-bot things are:

A Registration question that isn't so easy digitally but is for flesh an blood, at least in theory. If you fail the question when making an account it errors out an you have to go back an try again.

A Blacklist. Or rather, two. One is from wikipedia and I believe it is the one they themselves use, the other is a local list that we can tweak as needed should it be.. well, needed.

The blacklist works by if your post has phrase that matches the backlist the post won't post but will error and you can go back and edit your post and so on. There is one downside to this in that the blacklist changes and it is big, very big. Normal chatterings should not trip it however. In theory you all should not see any differences, but this should keep the place cleaner as it were.

(An to be clear both of the things I put in were mods for smf; while I have to put it in by hand someone else gets the credit for making them in the first place!)
